Entry 5: Topic Statement

Children have had roles in Horror films since the dawning of the genre. During the first half-century of the craft they were often used almost exclusively as extras or at best as supporting elements of the cast, existing solely to enhance an adult character. With the release of "The Bad Seed" in 1956 and the Innocents in 1961 this all changed. Their emergence marked a revolution in how writers, directors, and producers incorporated children and by exploiting the still developing concensus of them as innocent and vulnerable managed to manipulate the art of horror and thus evoked stronger feelings of fear and capitalized on the anxieties of its audience. Ever since this time child characters in horror have resided at the site of very adult concerns whether they be moral ("Children of the Corn"), spiritual ("The Exorcist"), sexual ("Carrie"), or even political ("The Omen").
I should have plenty of evidence by using first hand interviews with cast and crew members, journal reports, critical revies, and best of all the movies themselves to support my research. In which, I anticipate to conclude that with the transition from seeing children as small adults less than 150 years ago to the coddling of children as progressively more innocent and vulnerablein today's society, comes the succeptibilty of adults to have these feelings exploited. This possibility of making the scary even scarrier by capitalizing on adult anxieties and utilizing the defenseless as portrayers or seers of evil is an opportunity that the artists cannot ignore.
